Need Help Paying? Top Tips to Ask for Funding

Use positive self-talk and remember that your ask is reasonable.

  • It always helps me to remember that whatever I’m asking for is likely very small in relation to the amounts of money our leadership is used to discussing.
  • When you ask for resources thoughtfully and intentionally, it shows that you are growing, have developmentally-appropriate awareness of the need to negotiate, and it normalizes doing so for faculty and students around you.
  • In a very short amount of time, you will need to negotiate for much larger sums of money in terms of salary, startup packages, relocation expenses, etc. Getting practice negotiating for small items is key!

Focus on merit-based rationale rather than need- or emotion-focused rationale

  • Although positive personal impact is lovely and important to add once your negotiation is successfully completed, these rationales are easily countered, flipped, or dismissed.
  • Opt instead to identify merit-based and SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound) benefits. Specifically reference how the support will help you, your institution/program, and the specific person whom you’re asking. For example:
    • “I’ve had a very productive year with # new publications and # new conference presentations, recruitment for my dissertation project is on time, and I was very happy to have gotten our undergraduate RAs trained so that our [lab project name] is ahead of schedule. Attending this workshop will help me stay on track with my individual and team goals while preparing my materials this Fall.”
    • “Attending this workshop will help me complete the first draft of my materials much more efficiently, which will allow me more time to continue on with data collection for our lab’s project”
    • “My materials are in decent shape, but I think there is room to improve them and this workshop will help me apply important finishing touches.”
    • “This workshop will help me develop strong first drafts independently, so it will save us both a lot of time editing.”
    • “It’s important to me to apply to XYZ internship site(s), which is/are very competitive. I’m aware that our program hasn’t had many/any students apply/match there in the past. This workshop will help my materials stand out and will also reflect well on our program for future students”

Meet halfway

Do revisit the options already available to you. This workshop is a great use of professional development funds, fellowships, grants, or training awards you’ve already received, or even unused travel or conference funds.

  • “I have $50 remaining from XYZ fellowship, and I’d like to use it to attend this internship preparation workshop. Would you consider covering the remaining portion?”
  • Do ask your advisor/DCT/department chair if they would consider advocating for funds on your behalf (remember point #1 above!).
  • Also ask if your leadership can recommend internal or extramural sources of funding you hadn’t considered yet:
  • “This workshop is important to me. Do you know of any small fellowships or grants here at the College or University level, or extramural opportunities that I should consider applying to cover this training?”
  • Consider offering to split the difference. A 2-way or 3-way split between you, your advisor, program, department, etc. is a very small expense to each.
